Prevent problems occurring with snow and cold

  • The main problem in cold period is bursting pipes – this is a consequence of constantly moving ground, which, by turn, affects also the pipeline laid in the ground. With cold weather, the impact of these movements increase. The most „vulnerable" are cast iron pipes. If you see the bursted street pipelines, please inform our Emergency Line at 62 62 400.
  • To avoid the leakages, we suggest you check the pipes with camera inspection. That way you will find out the condition of pipeline and learn about possible risks. Big savings can be made with the repair or replacement of pipelines before the cold weather arrives!
  • In case your property pipeline is at least twenty years old and you have had problems with it before, it would be wise to repair the pipeline before the cold weather arrives and, if needed, replace it. Repairing or replacing the pipeline in frozen ground will cost much more. And if the asphalt needs to be restored as well, works must be repeated in spring.
  • If your sewer pipeline has frozen in winter time before, then it is probable that this will happen again. We suggest you lay the pipeline deeper in the ground or insulate it. When doing this, you certainly need to follow the design and construction requirements. Our advise is to have the experienced specialists to replace and construct the pipes.
  • To avoid emergency situations in cellars, you certainly need to ensure that the winter cold cannot reach the pipelines. Insulate and isolate cellar windows and the pipeline!
  • Do not use the water pipes in cellars as shelves or storage spaces. As the pipes bend and shift, this may cause a water leakage.
  • In case the water meter is installed in the water metering manhole, we suggest you insulate the manhole cover. For this purpose, you may use for instance at least 100 mm penoplast, by cutting a manhole-sized cover and placing it underneath the manhole cover.
  • If your house is staying empty during the winter period, we suggest you close the water connection temporarily. This will help to avoid frozen pipes resulting in bursting.
