Fill your pipes with fresh water after being away for a while

When moving back from the countryside to the city, one of the first things you should do is open the taps and let the water run. Water that has been sitting in the pipes for weeks may no longer be fit to drink.

If water has been left stagnant in the pipes of a house or apartment for weeks, it creates the perfect conditions for bacteria to multiply. Therefore, you should open all taps that have been standing idle and let them run. The flushing time will vary depending on how long the pipes inside the property are, but a few dozen minutes should be enough to replace the stagnant water with fresh drinking water.

As a water utility, we ensure a high-quality water supply is available at all times in the capital's network of over 1,200 km of water pipes. We take over 3,000 water samples each year, which confirm the high quality of the water.

In order to provide high-quality drinking water, a multi-stage treatment process that takes a total of 17 hours is carried out at the Ülemiste Water Treatment Plant.

The condition of the pipes inside the house significantly affects the quality of the drinking water that reaches the consumer. Old metal pipes can rust, turning tap water yellow or brown. Sediments create a breeding ground for bacteria, which is why it is important to regularly maintain pipes, taps and faucets. You should also check your property's water metering unit from time to time. If it has filters, these should be regularly maintained or replaced.
